FAA Medical Examination : $150
FAA Checkride DPE Fee: $700-$900
Ground School (Online) $300-$500
Aviation Headset $300-$1,200
Common Optional Costs
iPad (Electronic Charts) $500-$900
Foreflight subscription (yearly) $150
Purchased study materials $150
(ASEL – Assumes you have ASEL Private cert, 10 hours of cross country)

Note: Assumption is 20 hours of CFII use during training. FAR 61.65(d)1 states 15 hours minimum flight with CFII, this allows for 5 extra. Many students elect to use a CFII for most or all of their required simulated instrument hours. You may adjust this estimate according to you and your CFII’s recommendation.

Note: FAA requires 250 total hours for this certificate. 50 can be in the simulator which would lower your costs. Additionally, you must have at least 10 hours in a complex, high performance, or TAA aircraft. This estimate has you splitting that between the two. Finally, this estimate assumes 110 total ASEL hours at the beginning of this training. Adjust any hours according to your experience.
